Day three concludes with a wide open twenty nine runner class 2 Buckingham Palace Stakes (Handicap) run over the straight 7F. Favourites have a poor record in this but this year’s fav English Oak has a major chance having looked a horse way ahead of his mark when a very easy winner in the mud at Haydock 26 days ago. He has been raised 9lb however and the ground will be much faster so at the prices it may well be worth taking him on with Irish challenger Kings Time. Trained at Moone in County Kildare by Jessie Harrington this will only be his seventh career start and showed last time out (his first for 272 days) that he’s smart when winning a valuable Cork 7F handicap at 20/1. He’s 11lb higher in the weights now but can run a big race under Shane Foley from stall 5. He’s worth playing each way with additional places.

Buckingham Palace Stakes Overview

The Buckingham Palace Stakes is a flat handicap race. It is run over a distance of 7 furlongs at Ascot Racecourse and is open to horses aged three years or over. The race takes place on the third day of action at Royal Ascot.

Established in 2002, as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations for Queen Elizabeth II, the race is a relatively recent addition to the Royal Ascot schedule. It is named after the palatial home of the former monarch.

However, the race was pulled from the Royal Ascot schedule between 2015 and 2019. It was replaced with the Group 1 sprint race called the Commonwealth Cup. The Buckingham Palace Stakes was considered a huge loss from the Royal Ascot schedule during this period and was re-introduced in 2020 as part of an extended schedule post-COVID.
