Buckingham Palace Stakes Overview
The Buckingham Palace Stakes is a flat handicap race. It is run over a distance of 7 furlongs at Ascot Racecourse and is open to horses aged three years or over. The race takes place on the third day of action at Royal Ascot.
Established in 2002, as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations for Queen Elizabeth II, the race is a relatively recent addition to the Royal Ascot schedule. It is named after the palatial home of the former monarch.
However, the race was pulled from the Royal Ascot schedule between 2015 and 2019. It was replaced with the Group 1 sprint race called the Commonwealth Cup. The Buckingham Palace Stakes was considered a huge loss from the Royal Ascot schedule during this period and was re-introduced in 2020 as part of an extended schedule post-COVID.
