Hampton Court Stakes Overview
The Hampton Court Stakes is a Group 3 flat race that takes place annually at Royal Ascot. The race is open to three-year-old horses. It is run across a distance of 1 mile, 1 furlong, and 212 yards at Ascot Racecourse.
The race has undergone several name and status changes during its existence. The Hampton Court Stakes spent a period called the Churchill Stakes and it was an ungraded race that was included as part of a Saturday fixture called the Ascot Heath meeting. This was back in the days when Royal Ascot was only a four-day event so this meeting would take place the day after Royal Ascot had come to an end.
It wasn’t until 1999 that the race was upgraded to Listed status and re-branded as the New Stakes. In 2002, the race was moved to day 3 of Royal Ascot with the festival being changed to a five-day event to honour the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. The race was then renamed the Hampton Court Stakes.
In 2011, the race was upgraded to a Group 3 race and had its name changed to the Tercentenary Stakes to commemorate the 300th anniversary of Ascot Racecourse. The final stage of the race’s evolution came in 2017 when it was once again called the Hampton Court Stakes.
