First run in 1890, the Coventry Stakes is the most valuable race for juveniles at Royal Ascot. It is the term’s first high-class contest for two-year-olds, often producing a stepping stone to Group 1 level later in the season. Southern-based challengers often start in a Newmarket or Newbury maiden/novice whilst York is a good route for a Northern contender.

A bumper field of 23 spread across the track have declared for the Group 2 Coventry Stakes with no real stand out bet it maybe worth chancing one at a nice price each way. I have every respect for the likes of Aidan O’Brien’s Camille Pissarro and his son Joseph’s Cowardofthecountry (although his impressive debut win came on heavy ground) but the fact that James Doyle, the retained jockey for Wathnan Racing, has chosen Richard Fahey’s Catalyse ahead of the owners two other first time out winners Columnist and Electrolyte is enough to point me in the direction of the once raced chestnut who made a decent impression when winning at Hamilton in good style. That form has yet to be tested but it’s that type of race where it’s worth having a pop at a double figure one. I am also keen on the Paul & Oliver Cole trained Arran who when winning at Newmarket in April had the re-opposing subsequent winners The Actor and Al Qudra just behind him. I don’t understand how he can be a bigger price than that pair and he’s worth a small stakes each way saver bet.

COWARDOFTHECOUNTY looked to have any amount of untapped potential when he comfortably landed a Curragh maiden in April and, given the runner-up emphatically boosted the form in a Listed race on his next start, the form has a glossy appearance. The selection has a big frame to fill but his imposing physique suggests he has a very bright future ahead if handling the forecast faster ground. Aidan O'Brien boasts an excellent record in this contest, having won it on 10 occasions, and the fact he relies on just Camille Pissarro to represent Ballydoyle makes the son of Wootton Bassett a must for the shortlist. Al Qudra, Andesite and Francisco's Piece rate the pick of the home-trained contingent, with the last-named appealing most after a Listed race success in France 16 days ago.

Coventry Stakes Overview

The Coventry Stakes is a Group 2 flat race that takes place at Royal Ascot every year. It is run over a distance of 6 furlongs at Ascot Racecourse. Horses aged two years old are eligible to enter the race.

The race was first established in 1890 and was named in honour of the 9th Earl of Coventry, who was Master of the Buckhounds at the time. The Coventry Stakes was initially given Group 3 status when the current race tier system was introduced back in 1971. It was upgraded to a Group 2 in 2004.

Sir Gordon Richards holds the record for the most wins for a jockey in the Coventry Stakes. His 9 wins came between Manitoba in 1932 and King’s Bench in 1951. The most successful trainer in the history of this race is Aidan O’Brien. The Irish trainer has picked up 10 wins in total with the first being Harbour Master in 1997 and the most recent being River Tiber in 2023.
