A maximum field of nineteen have declared for the 1M 4F King George V Stakes Handicap for three year olds. Chances can be given to many but it’s the London Gold Cup form that may hold up here. The winner King’s Gambit could be very good and is favourite for the Hampton Court later on the card whilst the second Poniros, third Chantilly and fourth Persica all renew rivalry here. The latter has already franked the form by winning well at Epsom but is now worse off at the weights so the pick of that trio may well be the Ralph Beckett trained Poniros who had a neck in hand of Chantilly that day. He looks sure to run well although last year’s winning connections of William Haggas, Tom Marquand and owners the King and Queen appear to have a a solid chance with their handicap debutant Gilded Water. He beat a well fancied Sir Michael Stoute runner in the shape of James Webb easily by 7 1/2L in a Chepstow maiden three weeks ago and could be well handicapped off of 92. In a tough race he’s the selection each way with additional places.

Aidan O'Brien's Chantilly heads the early betting after his Newbury third and, as a son of Galileo, the step up in trip may bring some improvement. However, he may struggle to reverse placings with the runner-up from that contest, PONIROS, who also has plenty of scope for benefiting from an extra couple of furlongs and the draw has been kind to the son of Golden Horn. Naval Force is trained by Donnacha O'Brien and was value for further when losing lengths at every bend before staying on to score at Roscommon over shorter and he could go well at a big price if he keeps to the straight and narrow. Going The Distance and Persica are others to consider, though there is a chance they may now be in the grip of the handicapper.

King George V Stakes Overview

The King George V Stakes is a flat handicap race that takes place annually at Royal Ascot. It is contested over a distance of 1 mile, 3 furlongs, and 211 yards at Ascot Racecourse. The race is open to 3-year-old horses.

Even though the quality of this race is not as strong as other faces at the festival, it is often considered a gateway race for up-and-coming horses that may prove successful later in their careers. Horses that compete in the King George V Stakes are often seen competing in high-profile races such as the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot or the St Leger at Doncaster Racecourse.

No horse has ever won this race on more than one occasion since it was first introduced in 1984. The most successful jockey is Pat Eddery who has ridden three winners in Carlingford (1989), Source of Light (1992), and Give The Slip (2003). The trainer who has experienced the most victories in this race is Mark Johnston with six winners. The most recent of those wins came with Baghdad in 2018.
