The race itself was named as a tribute to the 4th Baron Ribblesdale, who was the official Master of the Buckhounds between 1892 and 1895. The first running of the race took place in 1919. It was initially open to 3-year-olds and 4-year-olds of both genders and was run over a distance of 1 mile. The distance was extended to 1 ½ miles after World War II.
