The Britannia Stakes is a handicap open to three year old colts and geldings and is run over the straight mile. First run in 1928 it takes place over the same course and distance as The Royal Hunt Cup and like that race attracts a big field of many unexposed horses with the winner usually going on to further success in higher grade.

A maximum field of thirty three-year-old colts and geldings spread across the course contest the 1M Britannia Handicap. A case can be made for plenty with the likes of Kevin Ryan’s Volterra and Ralph Beckett’s Qirat on the short list. The one I like though is Sir Michael Stoute’s Starlore who got no sort of a run in the handicap won by Qirat at Goodwood last time in finishing a 2 1/2L seventh. He also lost a shoe during the race which can’t have helped and the step up to a mile may be in his favour with his dam winning at up to 1M 4F. Richard Kingscote replaces Pat Dobbs who had a bit of a nightmare on him last time and as long as he’s drawn on the right side (stall 22 on the near side) can run a big race and is worth backing each way with additional places.

Britannia Stakes Overview

The Britannia Stakes is a flat handicap race that takes place every year at Royal Ascot. It is run over a straight mile on Ascot Racecourse. The race is open to three-year-old colts and geldings. It is run over the same distance and course as the Royal Hunt Cup.

First run in 1928, the race has been a long-term fixture on the Royal Ascot schedule. It is considered one of the most exciting races of the festival. It might not boast the quality of other more high-profile races during the week but it is popular with punters for its bumper field of runners.

The race became famous for several bookmakers donating profits from bets placed on the Britannia Stakes to selected charities including Prostate Cancer UK, Marie Curie, and Care Radio.
