Hardwicke Stakes Overview
First run in 1879, the Hardwicke Stakes is considered a Royal Ascot race that takes a quality horse to win it. The RPR of 128 has been required since 2010 for horses to enter. Most winners have been rated in the 130s which points towards a Group 1 level performer.
This Group 2 race is open for horses of four years or older and is contested over a distance of 1 mile, 3 furlongs, and 211 yards at Ascot Racecourse. It is named in tribute to the 5th Earl of Hardwicke, who was the Master of the Buckhounds in the 19th century.
Tristan is the only horse to win this race on three occasions having picked up victories in 1882, 1883, and 1884. Lester Piggott and Pat Eddery share the accolade of the most wins of a jockey in this race with 7 wins each.
