The Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk Standard Open NH Flat race is the last race of the day on one of the biggest betting days of the year, Grand National day. There is always a good-sized field, and it provides a fair spectacle racing around the tight bends of the Mildmay course at Aintree Racecourse. It will be won by a progressive sort who may go on and make their mark in open novice hurdle company the following season.

El Cairos can feature having finished a respectable fifth in the Grade 1 bumper at Cheltenham last month. Willie Mullins trained the winner of that contest and he is represented by GREEN SPLENDOUR, who gave a good account of himself in a Grade 2 bumper at Leopardstown in February, when giving the impression this extra furlong would bring further improvement. The latter is taken to reverse Leopardstown running with Koktail Brut, while Joseph O'Brien sends Le Labo over from Ireland on the back of a winning debut at Thurles. Scope To Improve added to his point-to-point victory with a debut success under Rules at Naas, and Quaviste is worth noting for the Skelton yard.

Standard Open National Hunt History
The contest was first run in 1987 and, having previously been sponsored by brewery giants John Smiths for eight years, has been sponsored by Weatherbys since 2014. It was given Grade 2 status in 1995. The 1997 edition of the race was cancelled due to a security alert at Aintree Racecourse. It was also delayed until May in 2007 after a faller in the Grand National that year was still being treated on the course.
