It’s another weekend, so I can turn my attention back to the MLS. There were mixed results last weekend and I thought a couple of the results were unexpected. I thought Montreal losing at home was a real shock, especially after winning 6 in a row without conceding at home. I’ll try my best to pick out a solid accumulator this time around. This weekend is a 5-fold accumulator 24/1 shot. Read on to find my expert football tips for the weekend’s MLS action.
Toronto FC vs ST LOUIS CITY (12:30 AM BST, Sunday 9th July)
I’ll start with the sole away pick of the accumulator. St Louis City are 17/11 to win this match and, whilst they’re favourites to win, I think they should be slightly shorter than that. Toronto FC come into this match in 14th place in the Eastern Conference. Only Inter Miami CF are below them and Inter have two games in hand over them. So, in effect, they could easily be bottom over the coming weeks. Especially with Lionel Messi set to make his appearance for Inter.
Toronto have won just 3 of their 22 matches this season and yesterday got thrashed 4-0 (at the time of writing) by Orlando City. Toronto are not scoring enough at home and have scored just 1 goal at home in their last four matches.
St Louis are top of the Western Conference. Although it’s clear to see that the quality level is not as strong. St Louis have lost 7 matches this season and still sit top of the league with just over a 50% win rate. When you compare that to Eastern toppers FC Cincinnati, who have lost just 2 games so far. Still, I think St Louis win this match. They are also having their own issues with scoring away from home but they won their last and I think they’re a better team on the whole.
DC UNITED vs Inter Miami CF (12:30 AM BST, Sunday 9th July)
Still, no sign of Lionel Messi at Inter Miami and DC United should win this one comfortably. I mentioned above that Toronto are 2nd from bottom. Inter Miami are rock-bottom and with no sign of any improvement. Inter Miami have 5 wins from 20 this season but have conceded 31 goals. They’ve had successive draws in July but they were both at home. Away from home, they’ve lost the last 4 in a row.
DC United are 8th in the same conference. They got a precious 1-0 away victory over FC Dallas yesterday (at the time of writing) and, in general, are in good form. DC United can be a very unpredictable team and can beat anybody on their day. As FC Cincinnati realised with a 3-0 thrashing a couple of weeks back. DC United’s last six home matches read W 3-0 (Charlotte) / D 1-1 (Nashville) / 3-0 (LA Galaxy) / D 2-2 (Montreal) / L 1-2 (Real Salt Lake) / W 3-0 (Cincinnati). Very solid form from The Black & Red.
COLUMBUS CREW vs New York City FC (12:30 AM BST, Sunday 9th July)
The third pick is Columbus Crew at home. They are now in 4th place in the Eastern Conference. Although Philadelphia Union have a game in hand over them and are just 1 point behind them. Columbus Crew have won 3 of their last 5 and haven’t lost in that period both home and away. The home form shows five wins in a row and in superb form right now.
New York City FC are a hard team to beat, but they now find themselves 11th in the table. That could easily be a bottom three placement with games in hand for both Chicago and Toronto though. New York have also not lost in their last 5 games but there were 4 draws in that period. Also, away from home, it’s 1 win from the last 5 and 4 draws. If we go further back though, it’s 1 win in 10 away from home.
Columbus Crew have also won both home matches between the two in head-to-head meetings. They also beat New York away from home (1-2) in their most recent match.
MINNESOTA UNITED vs Austin FC (1:30 AM BST, Sunday 9th July)
Minnesota United are my next pick, to beat Austin FC. Both of these teams are in the Western Conference and it’s actually Austin who are higher in the table. Minnesota currently sits in 11th place in the table whilst Austin are 8th. However, if Minnesota win this match then they’ll go above Austin. Minnesota also have a game in hand.
Minnesota had a really solid result last game week. They beat Portland Timbers 4-1 at home. The home form is definitely the key stat between the two teams. Minnesota have now not lost in 6 matches at home. 3 wins and 3 draws. Austin are a very solid home team (3 wins from the last 4 at home). However, away from home, they struggled to beat Inter Miami last time out. They have just 2 away wins in 2023. Minnesota are the pick.
VANCOUVER WHITECAPS vs Seattle Sounders (3:30 AM BST, Sunday 9th July)
The final selection is Vancouver Whitecaps to get a seventh win of the season. Vancouver have only played 19 matches compared to some (who have as many as 22 played) and sit 9th in the table. Seattle Sounders are 2nd in the table but, like many teams in the conference, they struggle away from home. Seattle Sounders have just 1 win from their last 6 away from home.
Vancouver have had a couple of 1-1 draws back-to-back at home. They’ve won the previous 3 home matches though and they’ve only lost once in the last 10 at home and twice in the last 15 games played. That included a 2-0 win over Seattle Sounders back in May.
That concludes the 5-fold accumulator. You can get all the stateside chat on our popular MLS tips forum.
