Last weekend was a heartbreaker as the accumulator was set to win. St Louis City SC was the final team that needed to win at home. They led 1-0 heading into the 86th minute and then conceded a late equaliser. Once again, so very close. We go again with the MLS accumulator and the BTTS accumulator this weekend. The expert football tips on this weekend’s MLS action stateside are below.
New York City vs COLUMBUS CREW (8:30 PM BST, Saturday 17th June)
The first selection is an outsider in Columbus Crew to beat New York City. New York City has been on a bit of a loss of form. They’ve not won now in 5 matches and they’ve lost 2 of those games. The biggest worry for them is the lack of goals. They’ve now drawn 0-0 in the last two matches and scored just 3 goals in the last 5 matches. They’re going up against a team that is scoring for fun.
Columbus Crew are the highest scorers in the MLS and have won their last three matches back-to-back. They have scored 9 goals in their last 3 matches. Away from home, the record isn’t so great but they’ve still won 2 from their last 5 and, to be fair to them, they’ve lost against good teams like Nashville or Cincinnati. I think it’s worth siding with Columbus here. They won the last head-to-head by a 3-0 score too.
NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION vs Orlando City (12:30 am BST, Sunday 18th June)
The second selection is New England Revolution to beat Orlando City. This should be a good match as both teams are in decent form and scoring goals. However, New England won the last head-to-head match between the two 3-0 and have won 6 and drawn 3 in the last 10 matches at home. They’ve lost just once in that period. Orlando City have been in good form too and haven’t lost in their last 5 games. They’ve won 3 and drawn 2 in the last 5 outings.
I expect both teams to score in this one. Orlando scored 10 goals in their last 5 games and New England scored 9 goals in their last 4 matches. I think New England win the match though.
NASHVILLE SC vs St Louis City (1:30 am BST, Sunday 18th June)
The next selection is Nashville SC to extend their record and beat St Louis City. In the MLS, Nashville have not lost in 8 matches and their home record is exceptional right now. They’ve not won their last 5 home matches back-to-back. They’ve conceded just three times in those five matches but scored 13 times. I can see St Louis scoring in this match but I would be very surprised if Nashville do not score at least 2 goals.
St Louis results at home have been decent but away from home they struggle. They’ve won just once in their last 5 away matches in the MLS. They’ve lost 3 of the last 4 games played and conceded 7 in the last 4. It’s Nashville for me.
SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES vs Portland Timbers (3:30 am BST, Sunday 18th June)
To finish, San Jose Earthquakes to beat Portland Timbers. San Jose Earthquakes are on a fine run at home and have won 4 of the last 5 and drew the other match. They’ve scored 10 goals in those 5 matches and conceded 4 times. They’re currently 5th in the Western Conference and take on Portland Timbers, who are 8th, 6 points behind them.
Portland Timbers had a good away win against St Louis at the back end of April. However, they’ve lost 2 in the last 5 away and drawn the other 2 of those. Just one win from the last 5 away from home in the MLS. They’ve failed to win in 13 of their last 15 away matches. The vote goes to San Jose.
