On Sunday, at 1.30pm GMT, Tottenham will host a very important match against Chelsea at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the Premier League. Spurs sit 4th in the table of the top flight of English football but are currently 7 points adrift of 3rd placed Manchester United. Chelsea are sitting in a lowly 10th place. A win for them wouldn’t move them any higher as they are situated 4 points short of 9th positioned Brentford. Here’s my Tottenham vs Chelsea betting preview of what should be an entertaining afternoon of football.
Strong home form for Tottenham
After a solid 2-0 home win against West Ham last Sunday, Tottenham will be looking to repeat the trick with another Sunday afternoon London Derby victory. They are the only team in the Premier League without a draw at home but have won 8 out of their 12 matches played at home. This shows the team’s urgency to attack and go out to win their matches at home.
Antonio Conte’s side have scored 24 goals this season at home and conceded 15 goals in that period. They can be a streaky side at the best of times with wins at home over the likes of Manchester City by a 1-0 score but prior to that they’ll go and lose to Aston Villa by a 2-0 result. So it’s hard to know what to expect from them.
Chelsea has “dead rubber” feeling already
It feels like Chelsea’s season is already over from a competitive sense as they sit 10th, 4 points from Brentford and having played 23 matches. They’ve won just one match in 8 and haven’t won in 4 matches. They continue to struggle to score goals. The 1-0 loss to Southampton was quite frankly, an awful result if you’re a Chelsea fan.
Away from home they have 3 wins this season from 12 games and 5 losses on their travels. The club’s last 4 away matches were 1-1 to West Ham, 0-0 to Liverpool, a 2-1 defeat to Fulham, and a 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest. The lack of goals and creativity is hurting Chelsea and putting Graham Potter’s position as manager under serious doubt.
Chelsea can boast a great record against Spurs
If we were going purely on head-to-head form and “bogey teams” then Chelsea would be laughing prior to this fixture. They actually have more Premier League goals against Tottenham than any other team they’ve faced. In the last 8 matches between the two sides, they’ve taken 20 points from a possible 24 up for grabs. Since moving to their new stadium, Spurs have hosted 3 matches against Chelsea. 1-0, 3-0 and 1-0 were the end results. All to Chelsea. January 2019 was the last home win for Tottenham.
Betting tips
As you can see, the head-to-head screams Chelsea. The history of their matches and most likely because it’s such a huge match with two bitter rivals is why Chelsea would raise their game. You have to wonder if they have the firepower this time to do that. Whereas Tottenham have been scoring for fun. Harry Kane loves playing in London and they are free-flowing and playing attractive football.
Football is a funny old game and despite Chelsea’s 9 away games without a victory, it still wouldn’t surprise anybody if they were to come out of this with a win. I just can’t see past a Tottenham win though. Tottenham tend to score at home and that would mean Chelsea would need at least 2 goals. A feat they haven’t managed since 16th October in the league.
