After Man City beat Arsenal on Wednesday, 4-1, it’s very much handed the title to Manchester City. The ball is very much in their court now as they are just 2pts back and with two games in hand. Arsenal has just 5 matches remaining and would need to win all 5 then cross their fingers that City lose. At the other end of the table, only Southampton look doomed, with 2pts separating 16-19th. I give my weekend accumulator tips below with the best bets of another weekend of action. With just 2 matches on Saturday at 15:00 pm, I expand into Sunday, too.
BRENTFORD vs Nottingham Forest (3 pm BST, Saturday)
Brentford was the latest team to beat Chelsea on Wednesday with a 2-0 away victory. They now have a home tie with improving Nottingham Forest, who caused an upset to beat Brighton 3-1 and also missed a penalty. Brentford have been pretty solid at home this season but despite having 4 wins from their last 8, they’ve also got a few draws recently as mid-table obscurity now looks like their season outcome. Something they’d have taken pre-season.
Forest got that very important win over Brighton and now is outside of the relegation zone by 1pt with 5 matches to play. Nottingham Forest’s away record, though, remains very poor. They’ve lost the last 4 in-a-row and conceded 10 goals. They’ve won just 1 in their last 8 away, too. I’m going to side with Brentford in this one.
BOURNEMOUTH vs Leeds (2 pm BST, Sunday)
Bournemouth has gone under the radar recently with solid performances and now sits 4th in the form table for the last 6 matches. They’ve won 4 from their last 6 and beaten the likes of Tottenham and Liverpool and gave Arsenal a good game, too. They’ve had the odd dodgy performance like the defeat to West Ham but West Ham came inspired in that one.
Leeds have 1 win from their last 8 away from home and are bang in trouble still. They’re outside the relegation zone by 1pt and in reality, this match is huge for them. If they lose then they go into the last 4 matches on the brink and those matches are against Man City, Newcastle, West Ham & Spurs. Perhaps a candidate to be dragged into the bottom 3.
I’ll go with Bournemouth to win this one though. I just don’t think Leeds has enough firepower to win this one.
LIVERPOOL vs Tottenham (4:30 pm BST, Sunday)
Tottenham came back from 2-0 down to get a draw against Manchester United (unfortunately for me, as I had them tipped up to lose and btts) but they did come back to get a point and stop the rut in their season. They are 5th in the table but Manchester United have 2 games in hand above them and in reality, they could be playing for the Europa League qualification more than the Champions League.
Ironically, if Liverpool wins this one then they jump above Tottenham, too. Tottenham could see themselves dropping to 7th after the weekend. The biggest issue for Tottenham is the away form. At home, they’ve had solid results as I’ve mentioned in the past but away it’s still pretty dire with 2 wind from 8 and no wins in their last 4. They are 18th in the away form league for the last 4 matches. Liverpool will still have aspirations of the Champions League and if that’s going to happen then this one is a must-win.
ARSENAL vs Chelsea (7:30 pm BST, Tuesday)
Chelsea losing again is the final tip. I think it’s got to the point where you can give any team a chance against Chelsea at the moment. They just can’t score goals and despite Arsenal bottling it over the title, perhaps the result to City will free them up and they can enjoy their football again. They most certainly are free-scoring in general and back at home I fancy Arsenal to get the job done.
Arsenal have not won in 4 now with 3 draws in a row and then the defeat to City. The title race is an obvious form of anxiety for them but Chelsea come into this having not won since March 11th and if you look back at Lampard’s record so far, it reads 19 matches, 16 defeats, 2 draws and a win.
