On Aintree Day 3, the tone will have been set and the final field declared for the biggest race in the Steeple Chasing world. Aintree Racecourse will have been sold out for weeks prior to the main showpiece contest in the form of the Grand National. The anticipation will be bubbling, and Ladies’ Day will seem like some far-off memory as the racing takes centre stage once again.
There are three final Grade 1 races on the closing day of action at the Aintree Grand National Festival, including The Turners Mersey Novices’ Hurdle, The Ivy Liverpool Hurdle, and The Maghull Novices’ Steeple Chase.
To add extra excitement on the final day, we have a handicap to start proceedings and a wide-open bumper to round off the day. However, the final day of the meeting is entirely focused on one race and rightly so. The build-up and the adrenaline will be kicking in for the big race itself at 4 pm UK time.
Last year’s renewal saw the unexposed I Am Maximus power home for a seven-length win for trainer Willie Mullins and jockey Paul Townend. Can history repeat itself today?
Below, we will take you through the Grand National race schedule and key stats for the bigger races taking place along with our top tips on the Aintree Festival’s final day.

Aintree Day 3 Betting Trends
I’ve taken a look back over the last 10 years of Aintree Grand National Saturday runners to find the interesting betting trends that you might find useful when considering your bets:
- The leading trainer in the Mersey Novices’ Hurdle in recent renewals is Paul Nicholls who has won the race four times. Those four winners were Garde Champetre (2004), Natal (2006), Elusive Dream (2008) and Lac Fontana (2014).
- Two trainers have not had the best of times over the last 20 renewals in the Mersey Novices’ Hurdle, Alan King has sent a total of 13 runners to the race without recording any wins, whilst Nigel Twiston-Davies has sent out 10 without a winner.
- Brian Hughes is a jockey to avoid in the Mersey Novices’ Hurdle. Of six previous attempts, he has only been placed in this race once.
- The leading trainer in the Liverpool Hurdle in recent renewals is Paul Nicholls, who has won the race four times. Those four winners come from just one horse, and that was, of course, the legend that is Big Buck’s (2009, 2010, 2011 & 2012).
- There is one trainer who has not had the best of times in the Liverpool Hurdle. Nigel Twiston-Davies has an abysmal record in the race and has sent a total of 10 runners to previous renewals without recording any wins.
- In the opening handicap hurdle, nine out of the last ten winners have been trained in GB.
- Dan Skelton specifically targets the opening handicap of the final day and has won it three times out of the last five renewals with horses including Gwennie May Boy, West Balboa and Aux Petits Soins.
- In the subsequent handicap chase, nine out of the last ten winners have been trained in GB.
- Seven-year-olds have a good recent record in the handicap chase, winning three from the last five.
