The Grand National is one of the most highly anticipated horse racing events in the jump racing calendar. 34 Grand National runners and riders compete to enter their name in racing folklore as they look to prevail victorious on the Aintree Racecourse track.

Every year, seasoned bettors and casual punters alike come together to celebrate the racing spectacle. Everyone wants to watch it and everyone wants to place a bet on it. It’s no surprise when you consider how unpredictable the race can be.

Only 7 of the last 30 renewals have been won by the favourite heading into the Grand National. However, 18 of the previous 30 runnings has seen the favourite finish in the top four places. Last year’s winner, I Am Maximus, was 7/1 joint favourite to make it 3 wins from the last 5 Grand National races for the favourites.

However, there’s always the odd shock. You only need to look back and see Noble Yeats in 2022 (50/1), Auroras Encore in 2013 (66/1), and Mon Mome in 2009 (100/1), who have delighted the bookmakers with their seemingly impossible wins.

On this page, you will find all the key Grand National tips and insights. We will provide you with our well-researched quick pick selections, trusted expert tips, and a selection of Grand National predictions from our valued and knowledgeable forum community members.

Our Experts Say…

At Punters Lounge, we’re always keen to share expertise and insights on horse racing. So what do our experts think ahead of the Grand National?

Let’s see who they are backing to win on Saturday with their Grand National tips.

Minella Cocooner is my each way pick. He was not far behind one the favourites Intense Raffles when 3rd in the Irish National last season prior to taking the Bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown. He stays well and will like the drying conditions with a big field scenario more likely to suit than what he has attempted so far this season.
My pick is Vanillier. He was a fast-finishing runner-up in 2023 and had a nice spin around the cross-country fences at Cheltenham despite nearly taking the wrong course. He is almost ghost-like in colour as he is so pale, so he will be easy to spot. Experience always helps around here and Gavin Cromwell could well train the first three home.
For what is often called a lottery I have found that just looking at the top 4 in the betting will often give you the winner. In the last 9 years, 6 of the winners were in the top 4 of the betting forecast and just betting them blind would have produced a profit of 30 points. This leaves Stumptown as the final selection. To support this, the last race won by Stumptown was much more valuable (£75k) than the one won by Hewick (£12k) and there were more runners in the race (16 v 6).
Twig. He is a massive price and maybe he won't be quite good enough to win, but I do think he can hit the frame at huge odds. He is a horse I know well from his hunter chase days. In the summer of 2023, he won the Summer Handicap Chase on good ground and last year, at the Cheltenham Festival, he was a very good 2nd in the Ultima. This season, the National has been the target and he's been campaigned to peak here and protect his handicap mark by running over hurdles. I think this test will suit him well, and at huge odds, he could hit the frame.
I am backing Stumptown to win the Grand National this year. I usually opt for an each-way pick at slightly longer odds but I was really impressed with their performance at Cheltenham in the Glenfarclas Cross County Chase last month. Gavin Cromwell has a heck of a talent on his hands with one of the most consistent performers under pressure that I've seen on a racecourse. Given that the favourites have prevailed victorious in 3 of the last 5 renewals, I think backing a horse at the shorter prices is probably the bet to place.

Our Community Members Say…

It’s not just our expert tipsters who have a wealth of horse racing wisdom. The Punters Lounge Racing Forum is packed with experienced and knowledgeable members who live and breathe the sport. We asked some of the most respected across the horse racing forum to provide their top Grand National betting tips.

My pick is Kandoo Kid. Really liked his performance to win the Coral Gold Cup, which was the first of the two training targets for the season. Jumps well, plenty of stamina, stable pick and the champion jockey on board.
On the surface of things it looks like the winner will come from the top end of the market this year as it has done for a few years now, the problem being that you could make a good case for most of them, Last year's winner is short enough given the extra weight and I am sure others have pretty much covered this end of the market so I will put a tentative each-way bet up. Given the faster ground and the extra places always offered. A horse I have never backed before is Bravemansgame at around 66/1, who I think may have a bit of a squeak off 11 stone given its back form but the Irish are going to be hard to beat again this year and it would be no surprise if they filled all the places. So an EW tickle on Bravemansgame is my way to the poor house this year.
Perceval Legallois. Used to negotiating big field races and comes here after a couple of good wins under his belt, especially the Paddy Power at Leopardstown, where he came from off the pace and won going away. I could imagine him doing the same and taking it up at the elbow. The only concern could be the drying ground, but he will carry my lunch money.
Beauport is my Grand National pick. For big field h/caps, I like to look at trends. After narrowing down the field, I will watch a few reruns, check if my selection handles the going, the form of the trainer etc. Beauport has won over 4m2f and 3m51/2f, has experience in big field h/caps, and has prepped with decent runs in Gd 1 and 2 hurdles. I also think Twig, who was 2nd in last year's Ultima H/cap Chs at Cheltenham and runs here off the same mark, has been raced mainly over hurdles this season and can go well at big odds.

Grand National Tips: Betting Trends and Insights

The Grand National is a race that is steeped in history. You have to merely utter the words “Red Rum”, and it’s a name that transcends beyond the sport of horse racing. It’s expected that a television audience of close to 600 million people worldwide will tune into the race. Here are some bite-sized tips and trends to consider if you’re looking to be one of those watching and betting.

  • 23 of the previous 29 winners were making their debut in the Grand National.
  • Returning victors rarely win. The last horse to win back-to-back Grand Nationals was Tiger Roll in 2018 and 2019. Before then, it was the legendary Red Rum in 1973 and 1974.
  • 9 out of the last 11 winners have had at least one previous win during the season they won the Grand National.
  • Each of the last 9 winners has been aged between 7 and 9 years old.
  • Experience clearly matters in the Grand National with 10 of the last 11 winners having at least 9 previous chase runs to their name.
  • Favourites haven’t always dominated this race. Only 3 of the last 13 winners have been the favourite or joint favourite heading into the race.
  • Weight is worth considering, with 9 out of the last 11 winners having carried between 10st 3lbs and 11st 5lbs.
  • 6 out of the last 10 winners ran at the Cheltenham Festival the previous month.
  • Horses that have performed well in the Welsh Grand National and Irish Grand National tend to also perform well in the Grand National.
  • Horses that perform well in the Coral Gold Cup meeting at Newbury Racecourse in November are also worth keeping an eye on.
