First introduced in 2015, the Commonwealth Cup is the first of two Group 1’s on the Friday of Royal Ascot and is open to three-year-olds colts and fillies. It is run over a short distance of 6 furlongs.
The race can be contested by those who tried to stretch their stamina out in the Guineas and return to sprinting with the winner going on to feature in all the best sprints of the summer.

Commonwealth Cup Overview
The Commonwealth Cup is a Group 1 flat race that takes place each year at Royal Ascot. Colts and fillies aged three years old are eligible to enter the race. It is contested over a distance of just six furlongs at Ascot Racecourse.
The race was added to the Royal Ascot schedule in 2015 as part of an overhaul to sprint racing across Europe. The Diamond Jubilee Stakes that took place over the same distance at Ascot was closed to three-year-olds that same year.
It was initially open to all horses, including geldings, in an effort to boost the prestige of the race in its early years. Geldings were eventually excluded from being allowed to enter the race in 2019. Legendary jockey Frankie Dettori is the only rider to taste victory more than once in this race.
