Ascot Gold Cup Overview
The Ascot Gold Cup is the focal point for the Royal Ascot Festival. It is a Group 1 flat race run over 2 miles, 3 furlongs, and 210 yards at Ascot Racecourse. It is open to horses aged four years or older. It is traditionally held on the third day of the festival.
Originally established in 1807, the race is considered the most prestigious race for “stayers”. It was first open to horses that were aged three years or older. The history of this race is summed up by the first-ever winner, Master Jackey, receiving 100 guineas in prize money. This win came before the reigning monarch of the time King George III and his wife Queen Charlotte.
The Gold Cup trophy is one of three perpetual trophies, along with the Royal Hunt Cup and the Queen’s Vase, awarded at the festival. This means that the winning owners get to keep the trophy permanently.
Yeats is the most successful horse in the history of the Gold Cup at Ascot with four wins (2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009). Sagaro (1975, 1976, and 1977) and Stradivarius (2018, 2019, and 2020) have both won the race on three occasions.
Racing legend Lester Piggott is the most successful jockey in the race, having ridden 11 winners during his career. Aidan O’Brien has enjoyed the most wins for a trainer with 8 victories. The owner with the most wins to their name is Sue Magnier with 8 wins.
