King Charles III Stakes Overview
The King Charles III Stakes is a Group 1 flat race that takes place at Royal Ascot every year. It is open to horses aged three years and older. The race is contested over a distance of 5 furlongs at Ascot Racecourse.
The first-ever renewal of this race was in 1860. Bad weather prevented the Royal Stand Plate from being run over its distance of 2 miles. It was shortened to 5 furlongs to cover the only part of the course that held up from the heavy rain. It became such a popular sprint that it was kept part of the schedule and renamed the Queen’s Stand Plate. Upon the death of Queen Victoria and the accession of King Edward VI in 1901, the race was renamed once more to the King’s Stand Stakes.
In 1973, the race was given Group 1 status but this was downgraded to Group 2 in 1988. However, it was upgraded to Group 1 level once more in 2008. The race was then renamed the King Charles III Stakes in 2023 to mark the 75th birthday of King Charles.
