Norfolk Stakes Overview
The Norfolk Stakes is a Group 2 flat race in horse racing held yearly at Royal Ascot. It takes place at Ascot Racecourse on day three of the festival. It is run over a distance of 5 furlongs with prize pool of £100k.
The first run was in 1843, and the race is decorated in history. It was initially called The New Stakes. The race earned its current name in 1973 as a tribute to the Duke of Norfolk who was Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot between 1945 and 1972. The race was a Group 3 level until it was upgraded to a Group 2 status in 2006.
Legendary jockey Lester Pigott boasts the best record in the race with 9 wins. He picked up his first win in 1961 on Abermaid before enjoying his last victory on Niche in 1992.
