The Queen’s Vase is a Group 2 flat race that is run across a distance of 1 mile, 6 furlongs, and 34 yards at Ascot Racecourse. Horses aged three years old are eligible to compete in this race. The race is scheduled as the second race on day two at Royal Ascot.
The race was initially established as a 2-mile race back in 1838. The original trophy was a gold vase that had been donated by Queen Victoria. It has held Group 2 status since 2017. The Queen’s Vase is one of three races at Royal Ascot, along with the Royal Hunt Cup and Gold Cup, where the winning owners can keep the trophy.
Back in 2013, the race was re-named ‘The Queen’s Vase in Memory of Sir Henry Cecil’ after the sad passing of legendary Sir Henry Cecil, who had trained a record-breaking 8 winners in this race including Falkland in 1972 and Endorsement in 1999. The most successful jockey in this race is George Fordham who has ridden winners including Arsenal in 1857 and Tristan in 1882.
