Cartmel Races Overview

Cartmel Racecourse, nestled in the village of Cartmel, Cumbria, is a quaint National Hunt (jump racing) only venue. Despite its small size, it hosts nine days of jump racing each summer, drawing large audiences.

The course features a left-handed loop slightly over a mile long, with a unique finishing straight that cuts across the circuit. In fact, the design divides the area into two public enclosures at the centre.

Cartmel Races History

Cartmel was the site of the Gay Future ‘coup’ in 1974. It was one of the most notorious scandals in horse racing that involved switching horses before a race and relying on the lack of communication at the course.
