The Jack Richards Novices’ Handicap Chase is the second race on day 3 at the Cheltenham Festival. The race has been introduced as a new race to replace the Turners Novices’ Chase. It is a Grade 2 race that is set to be run over 2 miles and 4 furlongs. It is labelled as a limited novice handicap chase.

The Jack Richards Novices’ Handicap Chase is a Grade 2 handicap chase registered as the Golden Miller Novices’ Chase that is replacing the Turners Novices’ Chase in the Cheltenham Festival schedule. The distance of the race is 2 miles and 4 furlongs of the new course. It is the second race of seven on day three of the Festival.

Jack Richards Novices’ Handicap Chase Betting Trends and Statistics

  • There was a similar race run at the Festival between 2005 and 2021 which was always well received with punters and had 16 different winning trainers and jockeys.
  • 14 of the 16 winners were aged 7 or younger with just one 8-year-old and one 9-year-old scoring.
  • The standout performance in its old format was Henry De Bromhead’s A Plus Tard’s breathtaking 16-length demolition job in 2019. He went on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup by 15 lengths three years later.

The race is a new one to the schedule but is effectively replacing the Turners Novices’ Chase. It was first introduced under that format back in 2011 when it was sponsored by Jewson. It was a Grade 1 National Hunt chase and has been registered as the Golden Miller Novices’ Chase.
