Chepstow Overview

Chepstow Racecourse was established in the 1920s and stands as one of the three racecourses in Wales, alongside Ffos Las and Bangor-On-Dee. Although, Chepstow holds the distinction of being the only one among these to host Grade One jumps racing.

Situated just north of Chepstow in Monmouthshire, Wales, the racecourse is a key fixture in the UK racing calendar.

Location: St Lawrence Road, Chepstow, NP16 6BE

Chepstow operates as a dual-purpose track, featuring flat racing throughout the summer and autumn, and transitioning to jump racing in the winter months.

The jumps course is characterised by its left-handed, undulating, oval shape, extending nearly two miles with eleven fences per circuit. It includes a five-furlong home straight and a 250-yard run-in. The ground can get very soft during the winter season with heavy ground a common going suiting the more robust staying type.

The layout, which features five fences in the straight — the first part downhill — typically benefits front runners or those leading into the straight, particularly over shorter distances.

The flat course mirrors the jumps in its two-mile circumference, with a five-furlong run-in. Although, all races up to a mile are contested on the straight course.

Chepstow Betting Trends & Statistics

Over jumps the staying types that handle soft conditions appear to do best at this stayers track during the winter game especially those that like to force the pace.

Paul Nicholls and his stable jockey Harry Cobden have the best records here in recent years and are always worth watching whilst Tom Symonds and Chris Honour also have good wins to runs ratio and are worth monitoring.

Chepstow Races History

First run in 1895, The Welsh Grand National has been the feature race at Chepstow over the years and there have been many excellent performances such as Burrough Hill Lad’s victory in 1983 trained by Jenny Pitman who went on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup less than three months later. There have been several horses that have gone onto victory in the Grand National itself including Silver Birch (2004), Bindaree (2003), Synchronized (2010) and Native River (2016).
