Cork Races History
Cork Racecourse was initially opened back in 1924. It was originally known as the Mallow Racecourse due to its location within the town of Mallow, County Cork. It is closely situated to Buttevant and Doneraile, where it’s believed that the first steeplechase was run in the year 1752.
The race is alleged to have been arranged as a wager between Cornelius O’Callaghan and Edmund Blake. It was run across a 4-mile distance between Buttevant Church and the St Leger Church in Doneraile. The term “steeplechase” derives from the church steeple as a result of this race. Evidence of the race taking place was found in the library of the O’Brien’s of Dromoland Castle.
