One of the UK’s leading racecourses, Haydock racecourse is located just inside Merseyside and hosts a selection of Group and Graded contests throughout the year under both codes of flat and jumping. The stand-out of these being the Group 1 Haydock Sprint Cup on the level and the Grade 1 Betfair Chase over jumps.
Location: Haydock Park Racecourse, Newton-le-Willows, WA12 OHQ.
The flat racing track at Haydock is left-handed and oval-shaped, spanning approximately 1 mile and 5 furlongs, with a run-in of four and a half furlongs. Additionally, there’s a straight sprint track measuring 6 furlongs.
For jump racing, the course is also left-handed, featuring stiff fences on the chase course that present a considerable challenge for the runners and riders.
The Stayer’s Handicap Hurdle is a Premier Handicap run over a distance of 3 miles and 58 yards taking place at the Lancashire track in November. It is run on the same day as The Betfair Chase and is sponsored by Betfair. The first prize is currently £71,000.
The Betfair Chase is the biggest jumps race run at the course and has Grade 1 status. Run in November every year it has a winners purse of £112,000 and can feature some of the best staying chasers around. It is run over a distance of 3 miles 1 furlong and 125 yards with nineteen fences having to be jumped. The winner is likely to be seen later in the season contesting races such as the King George VI Chase at Kempton over Christmas and the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
The Rossington Main Hurdle is a grade 2 hurdle run over 1 mile 7 furlongs 144 yards in January with nine hurdles to be taken. The winner’s purse is likely to be around £28,000 with the winner likely to be aimed at one of the novice hurdles at the Cheltenham Festival in two months’ time.
The Peter Marsh Chase is a Grade 2 handicap chase run over a distance of 3 miles 1 furlong and 125 yards and regularly run each year in January with nineteen fences to be jumped. The winner is normally an out and out stayer who could end up running in the Grand National or one of the handicaps at Cheltenham in March.
The Grand National Trial is as it suggests a stepping stone to the Grand National at Aintree in April and is run over a distance of 3 miles 4 furlongs and 97 yards each year in February where there are twenty two fences to be jumped. The winner’s first place prize can be expected to be in the region of £53,000.
The Sandy Lane Stakes is run on the flat course over a distance of 6 furlongs and has Group 2 status. The race is open for horses aged three years old only and has a first prize purse of approximately £71,000 to be run in late May or early June. This is a trial for the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot.
The Temple Stakes is a Group 2 flat race run over a distance of 5 furlongs for horses aged three years or older and takes place each year in early May. The leading horses from the Temple Stakes usually go on to compete for The Kings Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot the following month. The race is worth £71,000 to the winner.
The Lancashire Oaks is a Group 2 flat contest run over 1 mile 3 furlongs and 200 yards for three year old fillies and older. Run every year in July it has a first place purse of around £71,000 with the winner likely to contest the Yorkshire Oaks at York in August.
The Haydock Sprint Cup is the only Group 1 flat race run here and takes place each year in early September. Open to horses aged three years old and older it has an approximate prize of £242,000 to the winner. Run over 5 furlongs the leading contenders will likely be seen later in the year at Ascot’s Champions Day or even the Breeders Cup in America.
A fair spread of horses from sprinters to stayers do well at this course as the track is particularly fair to all likewise the jumpers.
On the flat it’s William Haggas who is the leading trainer over the past five years with an excellent win to runs ratio of 25%. Charlie Appleby has an even better ratio of 32% and any of his runners here have to be given respect. Jockeys wise it’s Richard Kingscote who appears to ride the track so well with the most winners over the past five years though both William Buick and Jim Crowley have decent records here with win to runs ratio of around 26%.
Over jumps its Sue Smith and Paul Nicholls who have the most winners over the past five years with the latter having a better wins to runs ratio. Two trainers who have exceptional wins to runs ratio are Richard Hobson and Kim Bailey who’s runners are always worth noting. Sam Twiston Davies has ridden the most winners from Brian Hughes with two who ride the track particularly well being David Bass and Jack Tudor who both have a high wins to runs ratio of around 38%
The draw can be of importance on the flat course with high numbers having the call on the straight course for races over 5 and 6 furlongs on soft ground.
Haydock Park is well steeped in history not only for giving a certain Lester Piggot his first winner in 1948 on The Chase as a twelve year old but also in the modern era for Paul Nicholls’ super star chaser Kauto Star who won four Betfair Chases, three times with Ruby Walsh on his back. Nicholls himself also saddled a brace of winners with Silviano Conti in the Betfair Chase making it a record six in the race.
