Kempton Overview
Kempton Park Racecourse, located in Sunbury-On-Thames, Surrey, near the Greater London border, is a premier venue for both flat and jump racing. The racecourse is renowned for its Boxing Day highlight, the King George VI Chase, which is the feature race of the season over jumps. Additionally, the Sirenia Stakes is a key event in the flat racing calendar held at Kempton.
There are two tracks at Kempton Park: a floodlit Polytrack all-weather course for flat racing and a turf course for National Hunt (jump) racing. The all-weather flat course features a right-handed, oval shape with two loops, catering to year-round racing.
The right-handed jumps course presents a significant challenge for the runners and riders with its demanding fences.

Main Racing Fixtures at Kempton Races
King George VI Chase
The King George VI Chase is a Grade One steeplechase run each year on Boxing Day. It is run over about 3 miles and features the main staying chasers from the UK, Ireland and even France.
The race is the second most prestigious chase run in England, surpassed only by the Cheltenham Gold Cup which is the usual stepping stone for the winner. The winner’s purse is currently around £142,000. Trainer Paul Nicholls has won the race a record thirteen times over the years with his Kauto Star having been successful five times.
Wayward Lad Novices’ Chase
The Wayward Lad Novices’ Chase is a Grade 2 novice chase run at the Christmas meeting and is run over 2 miles. The winner can expect to pick up around £31,000 and would be expected to be targeted at the Arkle Chase at Cheltenham the following March.
Desert Orchid Chase
The Desert Orchid Chase is a Grade 2 steeplechase run over a distance of about 2 miles during the course’s Christmas Festival. The winner’s prize money is likely to be in the region of £57,000. The winner is likely to be campaigned towards the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival the following March.
Lanzarote Handicap Hurdle
The Lanzarote Handicap Hurdle is run each year in January over a distance of 2 miles and 5 furlongs with ten hurdles to be jumped. The race is named after the racehorse Lanzarote who won the 1974 Champion Hurdle. The winner is likely to pick up around £53,000 and will most likely be aimed at one of the handicap hurdles at the Cheltenham Festival two months later.
Adonis Juvenile Hurdle
The Adonis Juvenile Hurdle Is a Grade 2 race for four-year-old hurdlers run each year in late February used as a stepping stone to the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham or the Grade 1 juvenile hurdle over 2 miles at Aintree. The winners’ purse is likely to be in the region of £42,000.
Coral Trophy Handicap Chase
The Coral Trophy Handicap Chase is run each year in late February over about 3 miles where there are eighteen fences to be jumped. It has held many sponsor names over the years including the Racing Post, 888Sport and Betdaq. The winner can expect to take home in the region of £85,000 in prize money with the winner quite likely to be seen the following month in one of the handicaps at the Cheltenham Festival.
Dovecote Novices’ Hurdle
The Dovecote Novices’ Hurdle is a Grade 2 contest run each year in late February for novices. It is run over a distance of about 2 miles with eight hurdles to be jumped and has a first prize of £34,000. The leading contenders here normally go forward to contest the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival the following month.
September Stakes
The September Stakes is a Group 3 flat race run on the Polytrack over a distance of 1 mile 3 furlongs and 219 yards in early September with a first prize purse of around £51,000. Sir Michael Stoute has won the race a record seven times.
Sirenia Stakes
The Sirenia Stakes is a Group 3 flat race run each year in early September over a distance of 6F for two-year-olds only. The winner can expect to take home around £40,000.
Kempton Betting Trends & Statistics
The Flat track attracts all types of horses although may not be suited to the big galloping types whilst the Jumps track is fair and suits all types of jumpers.
On the Polytrack flat-track, the most successful trainer over the past five years has been Roger Varian and Andrew Balding although anything saddled by the Godolphin operations of Charlie Appleby or Saeed BIn Suroor should be noted with a decent wins-to-runners ratio.
Oisin Murphy is the most successful jockey over the same period with the Godolphin jockey’s William Buick and James Doyle also high in the wins-to-runs ratio table.
Over the jumps the most successful trainer is, not surprisingly, Nicky Henderson with a good strike rate of 23%, followed closely behind by Paul Nicholls. Amy Murphy is a smaller trainer who does well here with a very decent 36% wins-to-run ratio so anything she saddles should be noted.
Not surprisingly the Nicky Henderson and Paul Nicholls stable jockeys Nico De Boinville and Harry Cobden lead the leading jockeys table here over the last five years with the former especially worth following with an excellent 25% wins to runs ratio.
The draw on the flat track swings in favour of the low numbers especially in races at a mile or shorter with a high draw hard to overcome especially for inexperienced two-year-olds. The straight has a cutaway two furlongs from home which can be used to get a run up the far side rail.
Kempton Races History
The King George VI Chase is very much part of Christmas for racing fans and one name that is synonymous with the race is the Paul Nicholls trained superstar Kauto Star who won the race a staggering five times, one more than the great Desert Orchid. Ruby Walsh rode him to all five victories with the only time he was beaten in the race, when third in 2022, he was ridden by A P McCoy.
