Wincanton racecourse is a National Hunt only venue located in Somerset. A sharp but flat track where its big days come in November for the Badger Beer Handicap Chase two day meeting and in February for the KIngwell Hurdle.
Featuring a right-handed, oval, and flat layout, Wincanton is more of a speed track than a stamina one.
Location: Wincanton Racecourse, Wincanton, BA9 8BJ.
The Rising Stars Novices’ Chase is a Grade 2 contest run over a distance of 2 miles and 4 furlongs with seventeen fences to be jumped. It takes place each year in early November with a first prize purse of £32,000. Local trainer Paul Nicholls has won the event on ten occasions.
The Elite Hurdle is run on the same card as the Rising Stars Novices’ Chase in early November run over 1 mile 7 furlongs and 50 yards during which there are eight hurdles to jump. The first prize is worth around £41,000 and is a weight for age conditions with the winner likely to be a Champion Hurdle contender for next March at Cheltenham. PaulNIchol, who’s stables are close to the course, has won the race a record eight times.
The Badger Beer Handicap Chase is run on the same card as the Rising Stars Novice Chase and Elite Hurdle in early November and is run over 3 miles 1 furlong and 30 yards. It has a first prize of £41,000 and is run in early November. There are twenty one fences to be navigated. LOcal trainer Paul Nicholls has won the race a record eleven times.
The Kingwell Hurdle is a Grade 2 national hunt contest run over 1 mile 7 furlongs and 65 yards in February with eight hurdles to be jumped. The winner takes home a prize of £42,000 and the race is traditionally used as a stepping stone to the following month’s Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham.
Wincanton suits the speedier type as the course is rather sharp and when the ground is fast can favour those who like to make the pace.
The track is located near to top trainer Paul Nicholls’s yard and he is easily the most successful trainer at his local track both in winners and winning ratio. He also sends many of his nicer young horses here. Chris Gordon is also worth a mention with a win ratio of 22%.
Not surprisingly, as Paul Nicholls’s stable jockey, Harry Cobden is the top jockey at the track with an excellent 30% win ratio. A favourable mention must also be made for Daryl Jacob who also has a decent 30% win ratio although has ridden far fewer winners here than Cobden.
Pau Nicholls has a staggering record at the course which is located close to his stables and has sent many of his superstars to Wincanton as a trial prior to bigger success. 2008 Cheltenham Gold winner Denman won twice here en route to bigger things whilst 1999 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner See More Business was unbeaten in three starts at the Somerset track. It’s not only Cheltenham Gold Cup winners that start out here as the 2012 Grand National winner Neptune Collonges also ran here winning easily by 13 lengths.
